Part Time Organist: Mulberry Street United Methodist Church

4/17/2024

Mulberry Street United Methodist Church is a downtown church whose mission is: “Sharing the heart of God from the heart of downtown Macon by fostering healing for the broken places of life”. Mulberry has a long history of not only excellent music in worship, but of reaching out to the community in service, mission, and education. The adult choir has multiple members who have music degrees. We support local schools of music through scholarships for music majors who sing with the adult choir and assist in the music program. Mulberry’s sanctuary organ was built by the Moller Organ Company in 1957 with several stops utilized from the church’s original 1928 E.M. Skinner organ. There are 40 ranks in the main organ and an additional six stops in the antiphonal division as well as seven digital pedal ranks and a digital festival trumpet on the choir division which were added in a console rebuild in 2002 by Guzowski and Steppe. The console is solid state with a multi-level capture system. Starting date: August 2024 Description: 1) Play for 11 AM traditional worship services weekly and for other special seasonal services. 2) Demonstrate service playing skill--hymns played to encourage congregation singing, supportive accompaniment for soloists, smooth transitions in the service, sensitivity to length of pieces, sensitivity to volume, improvisation for movement, etc. 3) Select organ music appropriate for sermon topic and scripture as well as the church season. 4) Rehearse on Wednesday evenings with the adult choir each week. Accompany the choir during worship services. 5) Rehearse with and accompany vocal and instrumental soloists for the worship service each week as needed. 6) Arrange for appropriate substitute organist when needed. 7) Demonstrate sufficient practice on Mulberry’s organ to be prepared for services. 8) Collaborate closely with Pastors and Director of Music to support the church mission and worship. Compensation: Based on experience and 20 hours of practice and service playing per week. Playing for weddings and funerals is a possible additional source of income.
