AWF Holds Sixth Annual Prayer Breakfast for State Officials

February 16, 2016
(Montgomery, AL) - The Alabama-West Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church Board of Church & Society hosted a prayer breakfast on February 11, 2016, in the fellowship hall of Montgomery First United Methodist Church. Alabama Supreme Court Justice Lyn Stuart, State Auditor Jim Zeigler, former Supreme Court Justice Sue Bell Cobb, State Treasurer Young Boozer, many representatives, including Randy Davis, Jim Patterson, KL Brown, Howard Sanderford, Harry Shiver, and Jack W. Williams, and numerous area United Methodist pastors, United Methodist Women and lay persons gathered to pray for our state.

Rev. Gillian Walters, associate pastor at Montgomery First, welcomed those in attendance and gave an opening prayer of blessing. Dr. Cory Smith, AWF Director of Connectional Ministries also thanked the group for attending and provided a prayer for our state and those serving it. He encouraged lawmakers to review the handout provided offering Social Principles from the Book of Discipline addressing some of the issues facing them at the present time.

Guest speaker, Dr. Brian Miller, addressed the group and added his personal thanks for the hard work our state leaders give to the citizens of Alabama, and informed the elected officials that our churches and church leaders pray for them and their work every day. He delivered a timely message of “Fear Not,” and encouraged them to be willing to make tough, yet wise decisions for the state knowing that God promised to be with us. He referenced Isaiah 43:1-5, 10.

"The AWF prayer breakfast continues to be a wonderful time of fellowship and prayer between our United Methodist leaders and state officials. The church leaders in attendance felt that the opportunity to interact with government officials was fruitful. I'm especially grateful to the Conference Board of Church and Society, Montgomery First UMC, the church’s work area on Church and Society and for the fine staff of the church,” said Susan Hunt. “It is my prayer that our elected officials will seek God's guidance in every decision they make and feel His peace leading them in such crucial work."
