The seminar for Growing Rural Economies will be held Thursday, May 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Atmore YMCA Library. The focus of the one-day seminar is to discuss the current state of financial capability for South Alabama and the proven strategies for promoting family financial stability.

The Growing Rural Economies Seminar is free and has been made possible due to the kind assistance of our sponsors and partners. Organizations and agencies that will benefit from the seminar include civic leaders, banks and credit unions, economic development commissions, local government representatives, and nonprofit organizations working with asset building and financial literacy.

Discussions about financial education efforts in rural communities will include distance or on-line learning, financial coaching, credit repair, second-chance accounts, automatic savings and direct deposits, Earned Income Tax Credits, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, homebuyer training, entrepreneurial development, and much more.

Speakers and panelists include: Alvertha Penny, The Community Foundation of South Alabama; Nancy Montoya, Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta; John Olson, FDIC; Sandra Dunaway, Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Mobile; Brian Murphy, Wells Fargo Bank; DeForrest Brown, United Way of Central Alabama; Raymond Huff, IRS; Sylvia Browder, Women's Business Center; Lisa Riley, ACCION Alabama; Grover Brown, Community Enterprise Investment, Inc.; Danny Patterson, The Community Foundation of South Alabama; and John D. Harrison, Superintendent of Banks, State of Alabama.

Sponsors and partners that have made this seminar possible include the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, FDIC, South Alabama Asset Building Coalition, and The Community Foundation of South Alabama. By strengthening families we improve our community. Families who can build savings and assets become homeowners and help boost the local economy.

The Seminar is free, but registration is required. A continental breakfast and refreshments will be supplied, as well as ample opportunities for networking with like-minded leaders.
