A word from Bishop Paul L. Leeland:

Our hearts are greatly saddened for those who lost their lives and for those who sustained injuries in the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20.  We continue to pray for their families and friends.

My prayers are also with all those who live, work, and enjoy recreation in our conference’s majestic coastal areas.  As we live with the uncertainty of how the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico will affect our environment, economy, communities, and personal lives we are sustained by the knowledge that God is with us.

Clergy and churches in the affected areas are already strategizing on how to best be a witness for Christ in a time of disaster.  Our conference Disaster Response Coordinator Amelia Fletcher is working with a variety of local, state, volunteer, and government agencies to prepare a compassionate response to what will most likely be a significant need.
