Glory Sighting: Saraland UMC Feeds Children

{Saraland UMC continues to expand its impact on the community as members hear and respond to God's call. A few weeks ago, their United Methodist Women contacted the local elementary school offering the backpack program for children who may not have sufficient food available on weekends. As it turns out, the need was huge and the congregation has responded generously. The program grows each week but now feeds 55 children each weekend. They receive a backpack full of food each Friday and return it empty the following Monday. Praise God for his blessings and for this opportunity to share with others. It is one of several new lay-initiated and lay-led ministries making a difference for others in the name in of Jesus Christ.}

2013 Missional Giving Calculator Launched

(Frank Dunnewind) - The 2013 Apportionment Calculator is now loaded on the conference website (see Features). To access, click here. You may remember that the World Service Fund is one of seven General Church funds. It is the only fund that is made up of multiple funds, thus the World Service Fund Calculator breaks out the total by fund and shows interested persons what their fair share of each fund is of the total. The same is true of conference budgeted funds. The only thing that is needed to make the calculator work is to know the amount of the Conference Missional Giving Fund and the World Service Fund. To learn more about a specific fund, simply click on the fund link.

ACE Offers New Leadership Course For Clergy

The first of the Four Areas of Focus for The UMC is developing principled Christian leaders for the church and the world. To address this priority, the Academy for Congregational Excellence will offer a leadership development program for clergy entitled, "Becoming a More Effective Leader." The program features a series of eleven seminars led by proven servant leaders who are volunteering their time to make the program possible. To provide for active participation in small and large group discussions, enrollment is limited, and participants will be selected in the order in which registrations are received. The seminars are scheduled on the third Thursday of each month, beginning in January 2013 and ending in November 2013. Classes will meet from 10:00am until 2:00pm at Frazer Memorial UMC in Montgomery with lunch included. Participants are expected to attend all sessions, and upon completion of the program, will earn 4 CEUs. Click here to review the program brochure, which includes registration information as well as seminar topics and names of presenters.

1 in 5 Adults Have No Religious Ties

(UMNS) " A report by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life shows a rise in the number of U.S. adults who claim no religious affiliation. In the last five years, the number of "unaffiliated" has risen from 15 percent of the population to 20 percent. Pew says the rise is mainly because of a generational shift, with 32 percent of adults younger than 30 saying they"re religiously unaffiliated, compared with only 9 percent of those aged 65 and older. Conversely, for the first time, the number of respondents who identify as Protestant has dipped below 50 percent, continuing a decline in the Protestant population. The number of Catholic survey respondents remained a steady 22 percent. Full report here.
