Mother Feels "Blessed" With Habitat House

(Montgomery Advertiser) - Carla Surls paused Sunday and brought her fingers to her eyes, the emotion clear to the 70 people gathered in the front yard of the house she helped build. A driver with the Montgomery Association for Retarded Citizens, Surls was about to open the door of the house she had spent the better part of this year helping to build, a house she and her son Brandon Freeman were about to move into. To the friends and family sitting on her new driveway " and Montgomery Habitat for Humanity officials and First United Methodist Church volunteers who helped raise the walls " she said thank you. Not only for herself, but for any future family members who might share the home. Full story here.

AWF Cabinet September Meeting Summary

(Dr. Jeremy Pridgeon) - The Cabinet of the Alabama-West Florida Conference met in a regularly scheduled session last week at the Conference Office in Montgomery. We continue to affirm the work of our local churches in the ongoing effort to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world and celebrate the "glory sightings" where congregations are experiencing fruitful, vital ministry engaging their communities in mission and service throughout the conference. Superintendents shared these stories with each other and continue to explore ways of making these known across the connection in an attempt to point toward examples of what we would hope to see taking place even more frequently in our churches. Full update here.

Around the Conference

Our Amazing Connection

Why is it that our membership went down but our missional giving (apportionments) went up? What does our missional giving accomplish? How does the conference determine what my fair share is of the connectional budgets approved by the members of the Annual Conference? The answers to these questions and more can be found in the "2013 Connection." This document is downloadable and can be printed for distribution to interested persons. It can also be found on our home page under features entitled, "2013 Connectional Giving."

Glory Sighting: St. Luke Enterprise Uses VBS to Help Cameroon

During Vacation Bible School this summer, St. Luke raised money to send mosquito nets to its sister church in Cameroon. They hold two Bible Schools each summer, one at the church and the other at the local YMCA. Between both events, they raised $884.48! Tracy Bullinger, Director of Children's Ministries shared, "I was so proud of the children. Each day, we told them a little more about Horeb UMC and about malaria. At the end of the week, the children made cards to send to the kids in Cameroon. I"ve been our VBS director for eight years now and this mission project really made a strong impact on the children. It is hard for them to grasp missions and what we donate money for but I really think they understood they were saving the lives of other children."

Holy Conferencing: Bringing Grace to Tough Conversations

(Interpreter Magazine) - Cheyenne, Wyo., was not immune when the economic downturn began in 2008. The economic stress clouded decision-making around building a new sanctuary at First United Methodist Church there " and led the congregation to rediscover a means of grace. "We had to figure out whether we wanted to commit to this, what the risks would be," says the Rev. Trudy Robinson, now serving First United Methodist Church in Littleton, Colo. "Holy conferencing became really important as we gathered at the table to listen to all the reasons of why we should or shouldn't move forward. We all had the common ground of wanting to do what was best for the church and create opportunities for more ministries." Full story here.
