Alabama-West Florida Leads The Academy for Spiritual Formation
(Pat Luna) - Every three years the Upper Room offers The Academy for Spiritual Formation in the Southeast Jurisdiction. Three of the six members of the leadership team are from AWF: Pat Luna (Point Washington UMC) is the Retreat Leader. Dr. Robbins Sims (FUMC-Eufaula) is the Theologian. Kathy Norberg (Gulf Breeze UMC) is the Hospitality Coordinator. Minta McDavid, Chair of the AWF Spiritual Formation team said "This is very exciting to have so many people from AWF to lead this important ministry. The Academy experience is a life transforming one and one I would hope all in our conference could have if and when they feel that deep yearning and call to attend." More here.
Cyclists Cross State to Raise Funds for Home Repairs
(Lisa Pierce) - From Friday, May 4, through Sunday, May 6, ten bikers/cyclists crossed Alabama to raise awareness about the housing needs in some of the poorest areas of our country, while raising money for home repairs in Lee, Macon and Sumter counties. The Third Annual Cycle of Service benefited Alabama Rural Ministry"s (ARM) home-repair efforts. Most of the families ARM serves are the elderly, disabled or single parents who live on limited or fixed incomes. ARM also hosts two free summer camps for underserved children in Livingston and Tuskegee. Most of the work is done in the summer time with two mission camps coordinated for visiting youth and church teams. Click here for full article.
Prayer Labyrinth Dedicated at Blue Lake
On Sunday May 6, 2012, a joyful group of friends and family gathered at Blue Lake Camp to dedicate a prayer labyrinth in honor of the 43 years of service and love of Retired Rev. Frank Scott. Set against the background beauty of the Conecuh National Forest and located next to the spiritual center of Lambuth Chapel, the new addition at the camp will serve all who come and will be an invitation to others who have never been to the facility. The Brewton and Pollard United Methodist churches partnered to raise funds, engage a contractor, and celebrate the installation, all without Rev. Scott"s knowledge. A consecration service shared that it "it is a tribute carved in stone to honor his many years of faithful service to the Lord and to the United Methodist Church. It is fitting that we honor Frank in such a way in this place, for he had a part in the establishment of Blue Lake. Over the years, Frank camped here, taught here, preached here and he prayed here. A prayer garden is a fitting way to commemorate Frank, for he loves to garden and is a man of prayer."
Dalraida UMC Member is Citizen of the Year
(The Montgomery Advertiser) - For Ken Hare, Montgomery has been a great place to be a journalist. It not only allowed him to reach professionally into a community rich in history, but personally, it afforded him the chance to work with groups he is passionate about " children, educators, the elderly. And in his role as the Montgomery Advertiser"s editorial page editor, the opportunities to make a difference were plentiful. "Most of the jobs in newspapers require you to be unbiased," said Hare, who recently retired from the Advertiser after 33 years, 28 of which were spent shepherding the opinion page. "Since I dealt with opinion, I didn"t have to keep that kind of distance. If there was a project I totally believed in, up to a point, I could get involved." Click here to read more.
